TEXT: PreDesign, Kaplan

Patterns of town forms in history (developed by restrictions and benefits of movement)

  • Rectilinear (derived from agricultural socities)
  • Circular (derived from herding societies and implemented by military installations)

Types of development

  • Street Front: Easy access to units, uniformity or orientation, clearly defined plan.
    • Common result is monotony- can be cured by varying setbacks and landscaped areas, particularly trees.
  • End-On: Increases lot depth, more remote from traffic noise and hazards.
  • Court: Encourages sociability, lower land cost per unit- encourages generous landscape areas.
