- Rectilinear (derived from agricultural socities)
- Circular (derived from herding societies and implemented by military installations)
Types of development 
- Street      Front: Easy access to units, uniformity or orientation, clearly defined      plan.
- Common       result is monotony- can be cured by varying setbacks and landscaped       areas, particularly trees.
- End-On:      Increases lot depth, more remote from traffic noise and hazards.
- Court:      Encourages sociability, lower land cost per unit- encourages generous      landscape areas.
